Ceremony of Carols Benjamin Britten
Translation of Movements 1 and 11

Hodie Christus natus est Today Christ is born;

hodie Salvator apparuit today the Saviour has appeared;

hodie in terra canunt Angeli today the Angels sing,

laetantur Archangeli the Archangels rejoice,

hodie exsultant justi today the righteous rejoice,

dicentes saying:

Gloria in excelsis Deo, Glory to God in the highest,

alleluia. Alleluia.

Angels Are Everywhere Daniel Pinkham

Angels Are Everywhere was commissioned by The American Boychoir, The
Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus and The Phoenix Boys Choir under the
Consortium Commissioning Program of The National Endowment for the Arts
in 1987. Both the text and the music were composed by Daniel Pinkham, a
rare scenario in most choral music. The work explores the importance of

"angels" both in religious works, and in folk lore, as well as their inevitable
presence in the young child's imagination.

Tonight's Conductor

James Pinhorn is a native of St. John's, Newfoundland where he appeared
frequently on both CBC Radio and Television as a boy soprano and actor. He
moved to Toronto in 1985 and completed a Bachelor of Music in Vocal
Performance at the University of Toronto. During a year of Special Studies in
Elementary Education and Choral Conducting at the University of Toronto, Mr.
Pinhorn served as the Assistant Conductor of the Concert Choir conducted by
Professor Doreen Rao. He then served as conductor of the University Chorus at
the University of Toronto for two years before accepting his present post. He is
a vocal coach for the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir conducted by Robert
Cooper, and is currently a music teacher with the Scarborough Board of
Education.

The University Women's Chorus

The University Women's Chorus began in 1986 under the direction of Michael
Coghlan and was conducted by Anne Cooper Gay from 1988 to the spring of
1993. The present conductor began his leadership in September 1993. The
repertoire of the Women's Chorus spans a broad spectrum, from early music to
contemporary Canadian composers, and from works composed for young voices
to the more challenging works composed for adult choruses.

The chorus was the first University of Toronto Choir to receive an award in the
CBC Radio Choral Competition, which led to the commissioning of a work,
Missa Brevis, by the well-known composer Dr. Derek Holman. Two
movements from this excellent work will be performed at the Christmas
Holiday Concert on December 4 of this season in MacMillan Theatre. The
Women's Chorus embarked on its first tour in 1993, to Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York, and has also premiered new works by student composers.
During this season, the University Women's Chorus will premiere a work
written for the chorus by student composer Jeffrey Koene entitled Dormi Jesu.
A highlight of the upcoming season will be a joint concert with the Radcliffe
Choral Society from Harvard University, on March 31, 1993 at 8 pm in Walter
Hall.
